On Deck 5, the Muses Disco night club is where late-night entertainment is offered. In the Muses, passengers are invited to dance around the world on a dance floor inset with a glass map of the world. Also on Deck 4A is the Lotus Buffet Grill with 200 indoor seats and additional ones outside. The pool itself is a treasure with a marble pool basin and a wealth of fine teak decking.

After Andrea Doria sank eleven hours after the collision, Stockholm sailed to New York under her own power, at a low speed of around 8 knots, to not put too much strain on the now exposed forward bulkhead  and she arrived on July 27. She could not return to sea safely of course, so it was decided to have her new bow fitted in the US at the Betlehem Steel cy. The Swedish government bought the ship, towed it to Oslo and renamed it, Fridtjof Nansen, after the Norwegian explorer. By 1985, the ship was called the Volker and was widely expected to be taken out of service. It repeatedly changed owners and names before joining the Cruise and Maritime Voyages fleet in 2015. Knego said there is “nothing like this ship in the world,” with its small scale, original artwork, wraparound promenade and storied past.

Seems appropriate that the ship and her bell have been reunited in what may be the final days of the historic Stockholm’s long cruising career. “Her stepsister and stepdad were killed immediately upon the crash,” Knego said. But Morgan was somehow miraculously lifted from the bed she shared with her stepsister and thrown onto the crumpled bow of the Stockholm where she safely remained with only a broken arm when the two ships separated.

Cruise itinerary program

To prevent defections, cruise passengers weren't allowed to travel with their entire families. However, when cruising Western waters, it was not uncommon for the ship to lose defectors fleeing to find freedom in other nations. The MV Astoria is the oldest cruise ship currently sailing, and Cruise and Maritime Voyages embraces the story of its vintage vessel. It employs an on-board historian to offer lectures about the ship's fascinating past.

Although the Stockholm was in no danger of sinking, the larger Andrea Doria was listing more than 20 degrees on its starboard side, allowing seawater to spill through the compartments. The Andrea Doria even boasted a life-size bronze statue of the ship’s namesake, a 16th century Genoese navigator. Passengers were assured of safety because the Andrea Doria was equipped with the latest safety technology on the seas, including newfangled radar.

The Andrea Doria had 11 watertight compartments and was captained by venerable Italian mariner Captain Piero Calamai who had won medals of military valor in both World War I and World War II. “This historic ship is a perfect fit for those who actually cherish the experience of being at sea,” Knego said. Ironically, when my fellow passenger stopped in surprise at the Stockholm bell, we were on our way to hear ship historian Peter Knego talk about “A Tale of Two Floating Cities” – the Stockholm and the Andrea Doria.

Launched in 1948, the Stockholm has gone down in history as the ship that accidentally collided with the Andrea Doria on July 25, 1956. Five Stockholm crewmembers were killed by the impact and 46 passengers on the Andrea Doria died when the cruise ship sank in the Atlantic. Launched in 1948 and originally christened the Stockholm, the ship has had many reincarnations over its 72 years. The oldest cruise ship currently sailing, the Astoria joined the Cruise & Maritime Voyages fleet in 2015. However, CMV announced in January that 2020 will be the ship’s farewell season.

Early in 2013 Athena was bought by the recently created Portuguese cruise company Portuscale Cruises and renamed Azores. As soon as her acquisition was confirmed, she was taken to a shipyard in Marseille, where she was revamped. She then entered Portuscale Cruises service after completing a charter for Berlin-based Ambiente Kreuzfahrten, from whom she was chartered to Classic International to join her fleetmate Princess Daphne. As cruise port, Astoria OR is included in the schedules of USA's largest river cruise companies - ACL (American Cruise Lines) and AQSB (American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company (AQSC)). The 116-days long World Cruise (itinerary October 17, 2017, through February 10, 2018) visited a total of 41 ports in 23 different countries on 5 continents.

Collision with Andrea Doria

MV Astoria has a total number of 277 cabins (of which 9 Suites, 43 Balcony, 229 Oceanview, 49 Inside) in 17 grades. Each of the cabins is air-conditioned and has private en-suite facilities, such as marble-floored bathrooms with a bath and shower, ample wardrobe and storage space. The staterooms also have music channels and a TV for in-house movies and information channels, fridge with a mini bar, a hairdryer, and a personal safe. The owner’s presidential suite, junior and balcony suites and also have a jacuzzi and a seating area.

The captain of the Andrea Doria was speeding through dense fog in hopes of staying on schedule, History.com noted, while the Stockholm was sailing north of the recommended route. In 1989, Italy’s Starlauro took ownership to convert it into the cruise ship Sorrento. However, before renovations, the company Nina di Navigazione acquired the liner and transported it to a shipyard for a complete overhaul. The result was the Italia Prima, which could accommodate up to 580 passengers.

The vessel is “adult only” (child-free) for passengers 16-years plus. Cruise & Maritime Voyages announced that after its 2015 summer season, the cruise ship will be renamed to “Astoria”. MV Astoria is a ship that was constructed as the transatlantic ocean liner Stockholm for Swedish American Line, and rebuilt as a cruise ship in 1993. Ordered in 1944, and commenced service in 1948, at 76 years old, she is the oldest deep water passenger liner still around in a non retired status. As Stockholm, she was best known for an accidental collision with Andrea Doria in July 1956, resulting in the sinking of the latter ship and 46 fatalities off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, United States. For a cruise ship to remain in service for 75 years is extremely rare.

After a change in ownership, the ship was renamed Fridtjof Nansen and was chartered by the Norwegian government as a shelter for asylum seekers in Oslo. The Olissipo Restaurant offers sumptuous meals served by Astoria's attentive restaurant staff. Dining is always a special event on board and passengers will experience high levels of gastronomic delight. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the Olissipo or alternatively in the Lotus Buffet which also provides the choice to eat "al fresco" on the Pool Deck.

Astoria sailed with Cruise & Maritime Voyages until 2020 when the company suspended operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been laid up since. AIDA Store (deck 8) was expanded to sell the clothing brand GAASTRA. The jewelry area was redesigned and started to sell the Danish brand Bering.
